Chili

- If you are using a Garmin GPS, download Proyecto Mapear maps (www.proyectomapear.com.ar). It is a free garmin maps proyect from Argentina (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia recently), upgraded and corrected very often. They are extremely accurate (even better than Garmin maps). You can install it on Basecamp and work from there. Of course, in Argentina it has more detailed points of interest (hotels, restaurant), but I use these maps for every trip I do here.

- From Santiago to Concepcion, travel west of Ruta 5. It is the main highway, boring as highways in USA, and only the big cities are close to it, nothing very interesting. I would recommend you visiting the Rapel dam and lake, and from there to Pichilemu, Santa Cruz (wine country), Constitucion (very close to 2010 earthquake), Cauquenes and staying as close to the coast as possible until you get to Concepcion

- From Concepcion to Temuco, keep on the coast but try travel only by day and getting closer to Ruta 5. This is Mapuche territory (chilean main native people, before the arrival of the spanish) , sometimes there are some conflicts over there at night. You can visit Coronel, Lota, Cañete, Contulmo, Puren, Traiguen,Cholchol, Temuco.

-From Temuco to Puerto Montt, it is the other way around. Try to stay east of Ruta 5. Lake Country, one after the other. Beautiful. Villarica, Pucon, Licanray, Panguipulli, Futrono, Puyehue, Frutillar, Puerto Varas

- Chiloe Island : Can't be missed. Try to visit all the churches, "palafitos" (house on the sea shore, build over wood stems) and eat Curanto (seafood with potatoes and other stuff, prepared under the ground). Go to Ancud, Castro,Dalcahue, Chonchi, etc. From Quellon you can take a ferry to Chaiten to start your travel down the Carretera Austral. Ferry company is Naviera Austral (www.navieraustral.cl, you can buy ticket online with a credit card)
